Baker betting on urbanism

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker’s office issued a press release today about a new piece of legislation called “An Act to Provide Opportunities to All.”

Unfortunately there’s no link to the actual text of the bill, but the bullet points sound interesting.

For example, the act will provide $25 million for a “Smart Growth Housing Trust Fund”, provide tax incentives for housing construction and promote the construction of “Smaller, denser and more affordable single-family homes”. The act will also allow municipalities to do demand-based parking and create parking benefit districts.

The press release, however, says nothing about new multifamily construction, which is much in demand right now, or if any of that “Smart Growth” will be walkable and transit-oriented or mixed-used.

It calls for some further research.
