General Electric, which announced it was moving its headquarters to Boston from Fairfield, Conn earlier this year, has filed a letter of intent with the Boston Redevelopment Authority for its new building on the waterfront. In addition to renovating two existing brick buildings, GE will build a new 12 story, 293,000 square foot office building and a plaza between Necco Street and the Fort Point Channel.
According to the LOI, the buildings to be renovated are at 5 and 6 Necco Court, but the description of the project site as bound by Necco Street to the east, the channel to the west and Necco Court to the north best fits 36-98 Necco Court. The rest of the site is currently surface parking and the whole site is owned by the Gilette Company.
The public plaza will be 42,430 square feet and will include improvements to the Harborwalk. Significantly, the LOI does not mention parking. The site is just a seven minute walk from South Station and is served by multiple bus routes. There is also an existing parking garage across Necco Street.
